So, learning a new language is challenging. You have to put in the time. We went back to class today after Spring Break and, man, I should have spent more time in the books. Before the break I committed to myself to spend a minimum of two session each day reviewing vocabulary and grammar. I let myself down - I may have done 20% of that.
You know that verse where Paul says he does the things he doesn't want to do and doesn't do the things he wants to do. Well ... it appears I can apply that to my life inserting German study as the thing I don't want to do. Like at this very moment, Lori is in the other room and I can hear her practicing her German pronunciation while I came up with the idea to write this blog post. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy learning German. If you have known me for long you will be shocked that what I enjoy is learning the grammar. It is like a puzzle that needs to be solved - what is the system to this madness? However, memorizing which form of the word "the" or the word "a" to use for each noun is maddening. Das Auto or Der Auto? It matters! Also, remember, all nouns are capitalized. I have heard learning will accelerate when we are forced to use German everyday in the streets of Austria. But, we are striving to pass a beginner proficiency test for our visa process which puts some pressure on us to learn it --- here --- before we leave. Please plead with the Father that my flesh would get out of the way and I would do what I should do - STUDY - and not find something else to fill the allotted times. Also, pray for supernatural learning to take place. Tschüss - Bye So, we spent the weekend creating a brochure and magnet as we start this process. Sending it to the print shop this afternoon. Exciting times.
This thing is huge! Although we have been to Vienna several times, we have not done this yet. I imagine it will be a great place to see the city and be reminded of the enormity of the task ahead. (Tim)
