How we arrived at this moment in time
It was the Spring of 1978, Lori and I were attending The University of Tulsa and leading the Junior High School ministry at our church. We were untrained and had no experience, but we loved building into these kids lives – for the first time we felt called into vocational ministry. We looked into applying to Seminary and we explored joining the Campus Crusade ministry Student Venture. However, in the end we moved to the Houston area and took jobs, started a family and became involved in our local church. We became entrenched in the busy-ness of everyday living.
During this time we learned about missions and had a couple of opportunities to heed God’s original call on our lives, but we never dropped everything and went. We had some ups and downs over the years and at one of our lowest points spiritually God was faithful and used circumstances and our teenage children to woo us back into a closer relationship with him (who said God is not a God of miracles?).
In the year 2000 we moved to Denton with the idea we would start the process of becoming equipped through Denton Bible Church for missions work. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to work now for almost seven years in the DBC missions office alongside some wonderful, faithful men. A little over one year ago Lori was preparing to retire after almost 30 years of teaching and we were once again pricked by the Holy Spirit to consider overseas mission work. We see another open door and, Lord willing, we are planning to walk through it.
Psalm 89:1 says “I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.” Back in the 70s we learned a praise song based on this Psalm. Now, we understand His faithfulness at a MUCH deeper level and truly do want to make it known to all generations. God is good, all the time.
During this time God has used circumstances to draw us to joining the Serve team in Vienna. God has broken our hearts for the people in that region of the world and given us a love for the team we will be joining. We see so many opportunities for ministry and are excited to see what He has in store!
We want to use this forum to communicate with each of you what we are doing, how God is working and seek your prayers. Over the next few months we will start this process by outlining what we see as our primary roles on the team and the process we will need to go through to move from full time DBC missions staff member to Austrian residents serving as a missionaries.
That God would draw us close to Him, and we would give him the glory each step of this journey!
That God would enable us to trust Him through the Language learning, support raising, visa acquisition, purging and moving process.
That we would love Him more each day and you guys well.
